Chapter 5 – The fundamental unit of life

This chapter is about life and its parts. Students will learn that the smallest functional unit of life is a cell, discovered by Robert Hooke in 1665. It states that a cell can independently perform necessary activities in life. The chapter will also let students learn about plasma/cell membrane, cell wall, nucleus, prokaryotic cells, cytoplasm, cell organelles, endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi apparatus, lysosomes, mitochondria, plastids, and vacuoles.

Chapter 6 – Tissues

This chapter explains how tissues are groups of cells and what the types of tissues are. Students can learn about permanent tissues (parenchyma, collenchyma, and Sclerenchyma), meristematic tissues (intercalary meristem, apical meristem, and lateral meristem), complex permanent tissues (xylem and phloem), and animal tissues (epithelial tissues, muscular tissues, nervous tissues, and connective tissues).

Chapter 7 – Diversity in living organisms

This chapter teaches students about

Diversity – the earth is full of organisms of different shapes and sizes. Only the animal kingdom itself contains the largest phylum over a million species. From small grass to tall Eucalyptus, there are several varieties of plants.

Biodiversity – The variety of plants and animals living in a given geographical area is called the biodiversity of that geographical area.

Students can also learn the need for a system of classification, classification by Aristotle, drawbacks of Aristotle’s classification, presence or absence of nucleus in cells, number of cells in an organism, mode of nutrition, level of organization in body, evolutionary relationship, a hierarchy of classification, Whittaker’s five kingdom classification, further levels of classifications, monera, protista, fungi, lichens, plantae, Animalia, and the elaboration of classifications of different kingdoms.

Chapter 8 – Motion

This chapter is about motion and its properties. The students can learn the definition of motion, uniform motion, non-uniform motion, speed, average speed, velocity, acceleration, graphical presentation of motions (distance-time graph and velocity-time graph), and uniform circular motion.

Chapter 9 – Force and Laws of Motion

This chapter will let the students understand the concept of force and laws of motion. It tells about the force and its effects, balanced forces, frictional force, the second law of motion, momentum, the third law of motion, conservation of momentum, unbalanced forces, the first law of motion, and inertia.

Chapter 10 – Gravitation

Students can learn the following from this chapter –

The universal law of gravitation, mass, weight, and freefall.

Importance of universal law of gravitation

  • The force that binds us to earth
  • The motion of the moon around the earth
  • The motion of planets around the sun
  • The tides due to the moon and the sun

Chapter 11 – Work, Power, and Energy

From this chapter, students will be able to learn about work, power, and energy. They will learn that for work to happen two conditions must be fulfilled – a force should act on an object, the object must be displaced, the energy and its forms kinetic and potential energy, gravitational potential energy and its derivation, mechanical energy, the law of conservation of energy, power, and commercial unit of energy.

Chapter 12 – Sound

A sound is a form of energy that produces a sensation of hearing in our ears. The students can learn about the propagation of sound, medium, wave, properties of sound waves, frequency, time period, the relation between frequency and time period, amplitude, softness or loudness of sound, speed of sound, the reflection of sound, echo, reverberation, and range of hearing in humans.

Chapter 13 – Why do we fall ill?

Health is a state of complete physical, mental, and social wee-being. This chapter discusses various factors related to our health. Students can learn basic conditions for good health, acute disease, chronic disease, causes of diseases, the immediate cause of diseases, contributory cause, infectious diseases (spread through air, food, water, contact, and body fluids), antibiotics, inflammation, and principles of treatment & prevention.
